How My Multilingual Journey Became a Business

Welcome to Multi Lingua Consulting

It is with great joy, and also, if I’m honest, a bit of fear, that I hit publish on this post and officially launch my very own business: Multi Lingua Consulting. It’s been at least a year in the making, and what a rollercoaster the last year has been! Businesses, as I have learnt, are not born overnight, and mine has grown from a lifetime of multilingual experiences woven between big life changes.

For those reading who may not know me yet, let me introduce myself: My name is Isabel. I grew up multilingual, between three countries, cultures, and languages. I was born in England to a Spanish mother and an English father. We moved to Spain when I was five and then Germany when I was ten. Each of those moves brought its very own challenges, such as learning a new language, navigating unfamiliar school systems, or the deep psychological challenge of no longer feeling like I truly belonged anywhere anymore.

Those early experiences shaped more than my identity, they eventually shaped my academic path too. At university, I completed my B.A. in British Studies and Spanish Philology. I also signed up for a lecture on multilingualism. It was not strictly part of my curriculum, but it sounded interesting. And in this lecture, I discovered something I had never thought possible. My personal experiences had names, theories, and research behind them. I had always assumed multilingualism was so normal – the struggle, the ups and downs, all just part of life. But there, on the PowerPoint presentation, was a little diagram of what could have easily been my family. And suddenly, I didn’t feel so alone anymore.

From that moment came the desire to help others feel that same sense of relief, to realise that there are tools and strategies that can help navigate the struggles multilingualism brings. I went on to complete a formal training course to become a multilingualism consultant. But turning passion into a business wasn’t as straightforward as I imagined. I finished university and was overwhelmed by the simple bureaucracy of it all. I was young and my parents encouraged me to find a stable job that paid well. So I ended up in a corporate role, which I then left not even two years later to start this business. And yet, that was already over a year ago.

A year that has taught me that nothing in life is linear, and that sometimes things just take the time they need. My family moved back to Spain this year. That’s something to grapple with. I also married the love of my life in September, and we moved into a bigger apartment. There’s been freelance work, and travel, and burnout, and a thousand other things that delayed my plans. But the important thing is to never give up.

Over the past year, I have refined my vision, curated ideas, and tested which ones will genuinely help others the most. All while battling perfectionism and imposter syndrome, and the fear of putting myself out there. But this business is not about me; it’s about all the multilingual people it might be able to help. Whether they are parents who feel guilty for “confusing” their children with multiple languages, adults who feel ashamed of their accents, or companies that want to support international teams but don’t know how.

So what can you expect going forward?

My consulting philosophy is simple: empathy first, strategy second. Because multilingualism isn’t only about language — it’s about identity, belonging, communication, and real human experiences. No two families, workplaces, or linguistic journeys are the same, which is why I listen first, then we build strategies that work together. Everything I offer is grounded in current linguistic research and best practices, but always explained in clear, practical terms. My goal is not just to give you answers but to give you the confidence and understanding to navigate multilingual life on your own.

The truth is, my multilingualism journey could have been a lot easier with support. So now I want to be that support for others – in whatever form that ends up taking. So whether you are just starting your multilingualism journey or are right in the messy middle of it, you’re in the right place. And with all of this in mind, I’m incredibly proud to finally welcome you to Multi Lingua Consulting.
